How to Make Recycled Denim Flowers
Step 1: Cut Out Petals
Start by cutting your denim fabric into strips 1 inch wide. For each flower, cut 8–12 strips, depending on how full you want your flower to look. For the length, choose how big you want your petals to be and double the length. I am creating a large flower, using 12-inch strips cut into 6-inch strips to form 3-inch petals.
Step 2: Create the Petals
Lay a fabric strip on a flat surface. Fold it in half lengthwise and press with an iron. Open the strip back up and run a bead of glue down the crease, and place a pipe cleaner in the crease. Run a bead of hot glue along one edge and fold it back over, then press the edges together with your fingers. Repeat for each petal that you want on your flower.
Step 3: Assemble the Flower
Arrange your petals in a circle, making sure all petals touch \ at the base. Adhere them together at the base of each petal with hot glue. Keep adding petals until you’re happy with the fullness, and you have a complete flower.
Allow to dry before moving to the next step.
Step 4: Add the Center
Once your petals are attached, cover the middle with something cute! A large colourful button or a denim circle with frayed edges looks lovely.
Allow the recycled denim flowers to fully dry.
Step 5: Shape Petals
Now that the flowers are dry, shape the petals into circles of petals with pointed ends. The shaping is easy with the pipe cleaners.
