I have been involved with the figure skating community for over twenty years. Over the years, I have designed and sewn figure skating dresses and costumes and made hundreds of props. However, I have struggled to find skating-themed decor over the years. It seems I always have to create my own. This easy-to-make Felt Ice Skate Garland is perfect for a Christmas tree, bulletin board, or windowsill.

How to Make a Felt Ice Skate Garland
Start by downloading the pattern from our free resource library.

Using a Cutting Machine
Pieces you will cut for the garland.
Each skate requires :
- 1 Ice Skate (Full Skates)
- 2 white felt boot pieces
- 2 black or brown sole pieces
- 2 silver HTV blades
1 – Upload the skate pattern into Design Space (Or whatever cutting program you are using) and add it to your canvas.
2 – Ungroup the design. Change colours if desired. Duplicate pattern pieces for the felt boot. sole and blade. Make sure to mirror the sole and blade for the reverse side of the skate.
3 – Each Skate has a front and back, which allows for the garland to hang either way with no right or wrong side. (Ideally, when on a Christmas tree, wherever the back of the skate is visible, it will always look the same)

4 – On a cutting mat (fabric or standard), stick the felt. You may need multiple sheets of felt, depending on how many ice skates you are making.
45- Select “Make,” load your mat into your machine and follow the instructions for your machine. Cut as many pieces needed to make multiple skates on your garland.
Instructions for Printable Pattern Users
1 – Download and print the pattern.

2 – Once printed, cut out the pattern pieces
3 – For cutting multiple skates, trace around the outside edge of the pattern pieces on felt using a piece of chalk. Once cut, wipe off any chalk marks with a damp cloth. Each skate requires a front and back of the boot, sole and blade, as well as one inner cardstock base.

Assembling the Garland
Putting the Felt Ice Skate Garland together.
1 – On a flat surface, lay a full skate cutout as the base.
2 – Lay out your ribbon or twine so it is across the upper third of the skates. Once in place, apply a bead of hot glue to the back and press it firmly into position.
3 – Using a heat press, adhere the blade to the bottom portion of the skate, lining up the edges.
4 – Add the sole, hot-gluing it in place above the blade.
5 – Add the top boot
6 – Using a darning needle and embroidery floss, add the laces.
7 – Embellish if desired.
8 – Allow to dry before hanging.

FAQs and Helpful Tips
Making a Felt Ice Skate Ornament
Creating an ornament from our felt ice skate pattern is super easy. Just skip the step of adding the twine and add a hanging string or jump ring with a wire ornament hanger, and you are ready to hang it on your tree.
Embellishment Ideas
Add a little extra to your felt ice skates with winter-themed buttons. Snowflakes are perfect and always look amazing. Create swirls with glitter glue or add HTV cutouts made on your cutting machine. To personalize, add Initials or monograms for a finishing touch.
Alternatives for Felt.
Any stiff material can be used for a base. Heavy cardstock, craft foam sheets and cardboard are great alternatives. You can easily make individual skates from cardstock and use them for name cards, ornaments or as window decorations.
Creating ice skates from Eva Craft foam is perfect for adding to wreaths.
Making the Blades without a Heat Press.
You can easily add glitter vinyl blade cut-outs using a household iron. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your vinyl brand. Place a piece of parchment paper between the iron and the HTV before pressing. Remember to mirror the blades for both sides of the skate.
I hope you love this easy DIY Felt Ice Skate Garland. It is a great beginner project.
