How to Make Mod Podge
Step 1: Add the Glue
Pour 1 cup of white school glue into a clean container or jar.
A container with a lid works especially well because you can store any leftover mixture for another craft project.
Step 2: Add the Water
Add 1/2 cup of water to the glue.
Step 3: Mix

Stir the glue and water together using a craft stick until the mixture is smooth and evenly combined.
You don’t want large lumps of glue remaining in the mixture.
Step 4: Check the Consistency
When you make Mod Podge, the consistency should be smooth and brushable.
If it seems too thick, add a small amount of water (a teaspoon at a time) and stir again. If it is too thin for your project, add a little more glue.

Step 5: It’s Ready to Use!
Apply the homemade Mod Podge with a foam brush or paintbrush.
For decoupage projects, brush a thin layer onto the surface, position your paper or other material, and then brush another thin layer over the top.
Allow it to dry completely before adding additional coats.
It’s that easy!!!
Labels provided in the free download come in 5 different sizes, to fit whatever container you choose.
Helpful Tips for Making Homemade Mod Podge
My Homemade Mod Podge Seems Thick
Thickness can change based on glue brand and structure. If the mixture seems too thick, add a little (teaspoon) water to the mix. Once you have the desired consistency, you are ready to apply it to your crafting project.
Variations
- Glow-in-the-dark Mod Podge – add glow pigment powder into the mixture
- Glossy Mod Podge – Substitute 1/4 cup of the White PVA Glue with Gloss Gel Medium ( you may need to play with the amounts; I have had mixed results with different glue and different gel mediums)
- Colour Tinting – I have used this for Halloween projects or projects that I want to look aged. Experiment by adding a drop of Umber for an aged look or a yellowing look. Only add a drop at a time until you get the desired colour.

Can homemade Mod Podge be used as a sealer?
It can provide a basic sealing layer for many craft projects, but it should not be considered waterproof or as durable as every commercial Mod Podge formula.
Homemade Mod Podge vs. Store-Bought Mod Podge
This easy to make Mod Podge is inexpensive and convenient, but it isn’t an exact replacement for commercial Mod Podge.
Commercial Mod Podge is formulated for specific uses and is available in different finishes and formulas, including matte, gloss and specialty versions.
Homemade Mod Podge is best thought of as an inexpensive DIY alternative for basic craft projects, such as decoupage crafts.
Does the Easy to Make Mod Podge Dry Clear?
The glue mixture should dry clear when used in thin coats, although the exact result can depend on the type of glue and the surface being used. I have found the best results with Elmer’s Glue.
Avoid applying extremely thick layers, as they can take much longer to dry and may appear cloudy while wet.
Storing
Keep leftover homemade Mod Podge in a clean, airtight container with a lid.
Because this recipe contains water and glue and does not contain commercial preservatives, I recommend making small batches and using them relatively quickly rather than storing a large quantity for a long time.
If the mixture develops an unusual smell, changes significantly in appearance or shows signs of mould, discard it and make a fresh batch.

We make Mod Podge because it is quick, inexpensive and incredibly easy. With just white glue and water, you can create a simple homemade decoupage medium for all kinds of craft projects. I wouldn’t necessarily replace every bottle of commercial Mod Podge with the homemade version, especially for projects that need to be waterproof, washable or extremely durable. But for everyday crafting, experimenting and simple DIY projects, this recipe is a handy one to keep in your craft-room toolbox.
Once you have your homemade Mod Podge ready, grab a paintbrush and start crafting!
